In 1973, the Hallmark Company introduced "a small line of six glass-ball ornaments and 12 yarn figures," (arguably) launching the ornament collecting phenomenon.

Very interesting. Leave it to Hallmark to start that. Add that to Sweetest Day and we know why Hallmark is such a brand name.
