Okay, this had us cracking up. A 40-yr-old reporter seeking the
ultimate authentication of her signed Will Wheaton t-shirt... you
jsut have to watch it...

Will Wheaton, you're a great sport. Was anyone else surprised
that he'd never been asked to authenticate something? I think he
said that in jest.

I'd write here, make sure to check out this article and
photograph of a young Justin Bieber fan who - in an effort to win
tickets to his show - had his lyrics tattooed on her thigh.
Why am I even mentining this? What does this have to do with
collectibles and authenticity, our usual subjects? Good question.
You'll see when you look at the pictures - the

Google has announced that it is using a combination of key-word
automated diligence and hands-on ad review in an attempt to
curtail the ability of counterfeiters to present their banner ads
to those searching for low-price brand goods.
This is good news. First of all, Google has a strong record of
putting ethics before profit motive. Secondly, like Collectors
Proof, these measures hit

Even an abbreviated NBA season has an all-star game, and the
counterfeiters have been wasting no time in contract negotiations
or collective bargaining impasses... they've been hard at work
knocking off everything NBA.
It's simple, folks... if it looks too good to be true, it
probably is. And remember: buying fake apparel is NOT a
victimless crime. Those goods are produced in horrible
conditions,

It is no surprise that a copy of the Mona Lisa - albeit, one that
was painted at nearly the same time and perhaps in the same
studio as was the original - is worth something. Even considering
that the copy is purposefully different - the lady with the
mysterious smile appears younger and perhaps more at ease - value
accrues to an object that has an interesting story, regardless of
the authenticity of some other

Have you ever had a piece of memorabilia stolen? Damaged? Or...
and think about this... copied by someone who eroded the value of
the original by selling the fake?
Stuff happens. If it's valuable to someone, it's a target for bad
actors. This is at least as true for memorabilia as it is for any
other asset. Just ask John Cappelletti, the 1973 Heisman Trophy
winner who went on to have a distinguished career

...then it probably is. You've heard it a thousand times, and
it's still the best way to determine that a collectible is
probably fake. It holds true this week in Indianapolis, where the
Feds are wallowing in seized counterfeits.
And it holds true in the NHL! Last week in Ottawa, the
counterfeiters were out in force. But, luckily for the serious
collector, so was the Coalition to Advance the Protection of

This CNBC series on the "largest underground industry in the
world" representing nearly 7% of all trade is a must-see for
authenticity enthusiasts like us Collectors Proof members.
The information is broken down very helpfully into merchandise,
fake pharma, cyber crime, particularly dangerous counterfeits,
and law enforcement's attempts to clean the whole mess up.
Wallow in it here - but know that you will want to shower
afterwards...
